And the Broom You Rode In On by Jerry Rabushka, about mainstreaming a witch into the public school system is just right for the times and just perfect to entertain both children and adults. It's funny, well-developed play about casting spells with a wonderful message about "fitting in" with the rest of your class and friends. It was a winner at the annual SUMMER SHORTS Festival by Youth Education On Stage in Williston, North Dakota and was popular with not only the adjudicators but the audiences and the cast! I highly recommend this 'fun' little relevant fantasy that kids today can identify with whether they are viewing it or performing its many clever characters.

I personally found the writing to be excellent. The freedom of characters and of the piece really allowed [my student] to interpret it freely as she saw fit. She found almost a dozen different voices and characterizations in the script, allowing her to really showcase her acting talent.

Synopsis

Sabrina doesn't stand a chance against this girl! Wouldn't it be great if you could resolve all your squabbles by turning your opponent into a toad? Rozelda finds being a teenage witch mainstreamed into public high school is fraught with challenges. How do you get into a clique when you have all those warts? How do you get status when the family car really is a broom? There's only so much a young girl can take before she starts to strike back. When there are so many toads in school that classes get moved to a terrarium, the principal has to take action! Behind the laughs is the question: is it worth giving up your identity to fit in?
